The Lady Palm is a fantastic indoor and outdoor plant. We love the saw-toothed ends of its leaves, and the airness between its stems.

It loves bright, indirect light. It does get thirsty, so be sure to keep the soil evenly most (but not soggy) during the growing season. Spritz the foliage now and again to increase humidity if the surrounding air is on the dry side.

A popular houseplant for more than three hundred years, the lady palm (rhapis excelsa) instantly brings elegance into any room. It's one of our indoor and outdoor plants — it can grow happily on your patio if you live in USDA hardiness zones 8b through 12. It grows from multiple stems and has fan-shaped fronds which give it a truly unique look. Not only is it beautiful, it's low maintenance too.

Fun Facts

Rhapis excelsa have been used as classic ornamental palms for more than 300 years.

They were cultivated by the Japanese elite in the early 1600s, introduced to Europe in 1774, and became prized American "parlor palms" during the 1850s.

My new Lady Palm arrived in perfect condition, even though the UPS guy left it lying on its side, it was so carefully packaged, it didn't matter.
