Heart Healthy Grape (Vitis labrusca 'Concord') is the standard for blue-black grapes and one of the oldest varieties grown. His woody, deciduous vine produces seeded fruit in which to make juice, jams, jellies, and after-dinner wines. The fragrant, greenish flowers will attract bees. In the autumn, the leaves are gorgeous and turn shades of yellow, red, burgundy, and purple. In the third year, production should be at optimum mid-September. The vines need elbow room to grow on an arbor, fence, or vineyard-trellis wire to be 15-20 feet tall and wide. Harvest in the second to fourth year.

About Heart Healthy Grapes (Concord)

Growing grapevines on a slope or valley give the needed drainage for the roots and create a microclimate for the plants to grow. Grapes need lots of water, good drainage, and well-draining sandy loam with a pH of 5.5-6.5 mixed with organic matter. Expect fruiting in the second year, but prune them away to strengthen the main trunk. Bake some biscuits, get out the peanut butter, celebrate your harvest party, and make some jelly the third year!

"The botanical name for this plant means 'wild vine.' Cut out old wood canes that are too small, weak, or too far away from the main trunk. When pruning leave at least one cane until the last, in case one breaks when tying down."
