Fun Facts: Luther Burbank, a...

Luther Burbank, a hybridizer, introduced the first Shasta daisy in 1901. He crossed the oxeye daisy and the English field daisy. This crossing was dusted with the Portuguese field daisy pollen, but Burbank wasn't satisfied with the petal color. Consequently, he took this triple hybrid and pollinated it with the pure white Japanese field daisy flower. These new flowers turned out to be larger and pristine white petals. This experiment took 17 years to achieve, the results being Shasta daisy hybrids. He named it after California's white Mount Shasta.
