It doesn't get more iconic than the split leaf philodendron. Also known as monstera deliciosa, or Swiss cheese plant, it's famous in interior design circles for its notched leaves. This large one will instantly bring on-trend jungle vibes to your home. It loves to spread out, so give it plenty space and use a coir pole to keep it upright. It's easy to care for and makes an ideal first houseplant.
Grows natively in Central American rainforests, from Mexico to Panama.
Tropical rainforests are the natural habitat of the Monstera. By developing holes in its leaves, the large Monstera leaves are better suited to withstand heavy rainfall and wind as they let the elements pass through the holes. These abnormal leaves (monstera means strange in Latin) gave the plant its name.
