The plant's genus honors Castor Durante da Gualdo, a 16th-century Italian botanist and physician who authored a book in the late 1500s defining medicinal plants from Europe and the East and West Indies. A mature plant will produce thorns and varieties bloom in white, light blue and violet. Duranta belongs to the Verbena family of plants.
