Fertilize in the spring when leaves begin to pop out, and all danger of frost has passed. Sprinkle Jon and Bob's organic fertilizer around the dripline to promote good soil health and add microorganisms to the soil. A light layer of compost is also good to add but do not push up against the main trunk. A balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10 sprinkled around the root area under the mulch is sufficient.
CleaningAfter bloom begins to die

After the last frost in the spring, select 5-6 hardy canes with at least a 1/4 inch diameter and trim back to 2 feet tall. Remove all other canes down to the ground. Mulch with pine straw, double-ground hardwood mulch 2-3 inches thick to retard weeds and protect the roots in the winter. In spring, allow the side stalks to grow up to two feet and cut them back to ten inches to encourage an abundant harvest twice during the season.
Prepare a two-wire permanent trellis using two wooden posts 15-20 feet apart. Attach the wires two feet apart and 3-4 feet above the ground. After pruning, tie the canes to the support wires with twine or cloth so light can penetrate around the plant. This support will make harvesting easier too.
