Luther Burbank, a hybridizer, introduced the first Shasta daisy in 1901. He crossed the oxeye daisy and the English field daisy. This crossing was dusted with the Portuguese field daisy pollen, but Burbank wasn't satisfied with the petal color. Consequently, he took this triple hybrid and pollinated it with the pure white Japanese field daisy flower. These new flowers turned out to be larger and pristine white petals. This experiment took 17 years to achieve, the results being Shasta daisy hybrids. He named the series after California's white Mount Shasta.

Trim off spent flowers to promote new blooms. Cut the foliage and stems back to a few inches above the ground at the end of the season. Water it well and add a shovel of compost around the clump. For winter prep, cut some evergreen boughs and place them over the clump to protect it through the coldest days. Remove the cover in the spring when the soil starts to warm.

Division: After the plant is fully established (three or more years), dig up the plant, ensuring you capture all the roots. Remove the root ball and slice through the roots with a sharp knife or pruners. Replant in a full sun spot (6-8 hours) in rich soil with good drainage or a container plant mix. Dig the hole twice as wide and the same depth as the original. Add root hormone at the bottom of the hole, place the root ball in the center, and water. Add compost and supplemental garden soil mixed with the native soil to the hole. Water around the plant again and keep the soil consistently moist the first year but not soggy.
