The Blue Star Davana Fern is a uniquely beautiful and surprisingly easy-going houseplant that stands apart from typical ferns with its striking, deeply lobed fronds in an exceptional silvery blue-green hue. Unlike many ferns, it is notably more tolerant of indoor conditions, handling lower humidity and average household environments with far more grace than its delicate cousins. A sophisticated and distinctive choice for anyone looking to add an architectural, otherworldly texture to their home.

Variegated Weeping Fig Care Guide

Prefers bright to medium indirect light and is one of the more light-flexible ferns available. An east or north-facing window is ideal. Avoid harsh direct sun, which will bleach and damage the distinctive blue-green fronds. The silvery blue coloring is best preserved in good indirect light rather than low or dim conditions.

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, approximately every 7–10 days. Unlike many ferns, the Blue Star Davana is more forgiving of occasional drying between waterings. However, consistent moisture produces the best results. Always use a pot with drainage and avoid allowing the plant to sit in standing water, which can lead to root rot.

One of the most humidity-tolerant ferns for indoor growing — it handles average household humidity levels far better than most fern varieties. While it appreciates moderate humidity of 40–60%, it will not suffer dramatically in drier conditions. A pebble tray or occasional misting is a welcome boost but not a strict requirement.

Thrives in the warm, stable temperatures of a typical indoor environment. Avoid exposure to temperatures below 55°F and keep away from cold drafts, exterior windows in winter, and air conditioning vents. Consistent warmth encourages steady frond production and healthy growth throughout the year.

Suited for outdoor growing in frost-free to lightly frost-prone Zones 9–12. In cooler climates it performs beautifully as a year-round houseplant. Its adaptability to a range of indoor conditions makes it one of the most reliable and rewarding ferns available for indoor growing across virtually any climate.

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can cause frond tip burn and salt buildup in the soil. Our Instant Plant Food is a simple, effective choice — just add to your watering can once a month to keep this beautiful fern producing healthy, vibrant new fronds. Reduce feeding in fall and pause entirely through winter when growth slows.

Repot every two years in spring when the rhizome begins to crowd the pot or roots emerge from drainage holes. Choose a wide, shallow container rather than a deep one, as this fern's rhizomes spread horizontally. Use a light, well-draining potting mix with good organic content. Water gently after repotting and keep in indirect light while it settles over the following 1–2 weeks.

Remove old, browning, or damaged fronds by cutting cleanly at the base as they appear throughout the year. Gently dust the fronds with a soft brush or give a gentle rinse in the sink or shower periodically to remove accumulated dust and keep the distinctive blue-green surface looking its best. Avoid rubbing the fronds, which can damage their delicate surface texture.

Propagate by division in spring by carefully separating the root mass into sections, each with several healthy fronds and a portion of the rhizome. Pot each division into fresh, well-draining potting mix and keep in a warm, humid location with indirect light while establishing. Rhizome cuttings — sections of the creeping surface rhizome with at least one growth point — can also be laid on moist potting mix and kept warm and humid until new fronds emerge.
