Hemerocallis 'Garnet' is a stunning daylily that brings a bold sweep of deep, jewel-toned burgundy-red blooms to patios, porches, and garden borders alike. Exceptionally tough, long-blooming, and virtually maintenance-free, it thrives in a container on your porch or planted directly in the landscape, making it one of the most versatile and rewarding plants you can add to your outdoor space. A spectacular choice for adding rich, saturated color to any summer garden display.

Hemerocallis 'Garnet' Care Guide

Thrives in full sun and produces the most abundant bloom display with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. A sunny porch, patio, or south-facing garden border is ideal. While it tolerates partial shade, flowering will be noticeably reduced, and stems may become leggy in lower light conditions.

Water consistently during the growing season, keeping soil evenly moist but well-drained. Container-grown plants dry out faster than in-ground plantings and may need watering every 3–5 days during summer. Once established in the ground, it becomes quite drought-tolerant. Always ensure containers have adequate drainage to prevent root rot.

Naturally adapted to outdoor conditions and handles a wide range of ambient humidity with ease. No supplemental humidity is required. Good air circulation around the plant is beneficial and helps prevent fungal issues, particularly in hot and humid summer climates.

An exceptionally cold-hardy and heat-tolerant perennial that performs reliably across a wide range of outdoor climates. It handles hard freezes with ease when planted in the ground and tolerates summer heat well. In containers, move to a sheltered location during extreme cold snaps below 15°F to protect the root system.

A reliably cold-hardy perennial that returns year after year in Zones 3–9. In containers on a porch or patio, it can be left outdoors through winter in most zones with minimal protection. When planted in the landscape, it will naturalize and spread beautifully over time, delivering more blooms each season.

Feed once in early spring as new growth emerges and again in early summer just before peak bloom with a balanced fertilizer. Avoid high-nitrogen formulas in summer, which promote foliage over flowers. Our Instant Plant Food works perfectly as part of a simple twice-yearly outdoor feeding schedule — mix into your watering routine each season to support strong stems and vivid, abundant blooms.

Repot container-grown plants every two years in early spring before new growth begins, or when the plant is visibly overcrowding its pot. Choose a container at least 2 inches larger with excellent drainage. Use a rich, well-draining potting mix amended with compost. Water thoroughly after repotting and place in full sun. For in-ground planting, simply divide and replant as needed.

Deadhead individual spent blooms daily during the flowering season by snapping or snipping them off at the base of the flower stem to keep the display looking fresh. Once all buds on a stem have opened and faded, cut the entire flower stem down to the foliage. Cut back all foliage to a few inches above the crown in late fall or early spring to tidy the plant for the new season.

Divide clumps every 3–5 years in early spring or early fall to reinvigorate the plant and increase your collection. Dig up the entire clump, separate into sections using a sharp spade or knife — each section should have several fans of foliage and a healthy root system. Replant or repot immediately at the same depth, water thoroughly, and keep moist until established.
