Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue' is one of the most striking and versatile ornamental grasses available, forming a neat, architectural mound of intensely silver-blue foliage that adds cool, eye-catching color and fine texture to any outdoor space. Equally beautiful in a porch container, a sunny patio arrangement, or planted as a ground-cover accent in the landscape, it pairs beautifully with almost any other plant and looks stunning year-round. Low-maintenance, drought-tolerant, and endlessly elegant. This is a must-have for any outdoor plant collection.

Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue' Care Guide

Performs best in full sun, which is essential for developing and maintaining the distinctive intense silver-blue foliage color this variety is celebrated for. A minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight daily is ideal on an open porch, patio, or in a sunny border. In shade, the blue coloring fades to a duller green and the tight mound form becomes loose and open.

A drought-tolerant grass once established in the ground or settled in a container. Water container plants every 10–14 days, allowing the soil to dry well between waterings. Overwatering and poorly drained soil are the primary causes of decline. In the landscape, established plants require little to no supplemental watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Prefers dry to moderate outdoor conditions and actually performs better in lower humidity environments. In hot, humid climates it can be prone to crown rot and center die-out — excellent drainage and good air circulation on an open porch or patio helps significantly. It is particularly well suited to drier western and coastal climates.

A remarkably cold-hardy ornamental grass that tolerates hard freezes well and maintains attractive form even through winter in most climates. It can struggle in prolonged extreme heat and humidity, where the clumps may open up and brown in the center. In the hottest climates, some afternoon shade extends its season and maintains the best blue color.

A reliable year-round performer in Zones 4–8, both as a container plant and as a landscape planting. In containers it provides striking year-round structure and color on a porch or patio with virtually no maintenance. In the landscape it forms attractive, spreading drifts of silver-blue that look beautiful as border edging, rock garden accents, or mass plantings.

Feed lightly once in early spring with a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer as new growth begins. 'Elijah Blue' is a light feeder and over-fertilizing with nitrogen will diminish the distinctive blue foliage color and promote excessive soft, floppy growth. Our Instant Plant Food used lightly in your early spring watering routine provides all the nutrition this beautiful ornamental grass needs for a full season of striking color.

Repot container plants every two years in early spring, combining repotting with division to refresh the planting. Use a lean, well-draining potting mix amended with perlite or coarse grit — avoid rich, moisture-retentive mixes which can promote rot. Choose a container with excellent drainage. For in-ground planting, select a sunny, well-drained spot and avoid heavy clay soils.

In early spring, comb through the mound with gloved fingers or a wide-toothed rake to remove any dead brown foliage from the previous season. Every 2–3 years, divide the clump in spring to refresh and reinvigorate it as the center naturally begins to die out. Beyond this seasonal tidy, 'Elijah Blue' requires virtually no ongoing cleaning or grooming through the season.

Divide clumps every 2–3 years in early spring before new growth begins. Dig up the entire clump and separate into sections, discarding any dead center portions and retaining only the vigorous outer growth. Each division should be a compact section with healthy roots and foliage. Replant or pot immediately at the same depth, water well, and keep in full sun while establishing over the following 2–3 weeks.
