Caladiums are tropical bulbs that thrive in warm and humid climates. In warm, frost-free regions, they can remain outdoors year-round. In colder climates or during colder seasons, Caladiums should be brought inside to avoid frost damage.

Caladiums are members of the Araceae family and are commonly known as Elephant Ear plants. There are well over 1000 named cultivars of Caladium, each with distinct colors, patterns, and shapes.

Caladium Care Guide & Presentation

Caladiums: Overview

Caladium plants (Caladium) are popular tropical bulbs prized for their magnificent, decorative foliage. Caladium varieties come in a huge range of colorful patterns and combinations. Caladium plants are called Elephant Ear plants (like Alocasia) because their leaves resemble the animal’s ear shape. These gorgeous tropical plants belong to the Araceae family and originate from the humid, tropical areas of South America, along the basin of the Amazon River.

You can grow Caladium Elephant Ear as a fun and colorful indoor plant, but it’s also an ideal garden border plant for hardiness zones 9-10. But how big do Caladiums get? These plants can grow anywhere from 12 to 35 inches tall, so they need space. Caladium care is easy, making these low-maintenance plants ideal for beginners. Caladiums prefer medium to bright sunlight. All Caladium types are toxic to pets and should be kept out of their reach.

Caladium plants symbolize creativity, joy, and love, due to their uniquely colored, heart-shaped leaves.

Caladium Plant: Care Guide

Elephant Ear plants are easy to grow, even for beginner gardeners. Here’s how to care for Caladiums in pots or your garden:

Watering and Humidity

Elephant Ear Caladium plants prefer the upper inches of their soil to dry between waterings. Outdoor potted plants may need more water as the soil tends to dry out quicker in pots in hot weather. These humidity-loving plants require 50% to 80% humidity.

Light and Temperature

Do Caladiums like sun or shade best? Indoor plants need bright, indirect sun, ideally by an east or north-facing window. Outdoors, Caladiums thrive in partial shade or bright morning sunlight. Note, however, that many white Caladium species need shelter from direct sun, which can burn their delicate foliage. Caladium plants grow best at warm temperatures of 65°–85°F.

Soil and Repotting

The best soil for planting Caladiums should be well-draining, slightly acidic, and rich in compost or organic matter. Add coco coir or perlite for aeration and drainage. After choosing a Caladium for sale, wait at least a month before repotting your new plant. While Caladiums don’t mind being slightly rootbound, they normally require repotting every 2-3 years.

Feeding and Propagation

Fertilize your Caladium plants with a balanced liquid fertilizer every month. Caladium propagation is easy; divide the Caladium bulbs (tubers) in the spring, using a clean, sharp knife, and repot in well-draining soil.

Pruning, Cleaning, and Common Issues

Prune Caladium plants to remove dead or damaged leaves.

Caladiums require little care, but common issues may include browning leaf edges due to overfertilization, low humidity, or overexposure to sunlight. Small Caladium leaf size usually results from a lack of nutrients; feed your plants regularly to promote lush foliage.
