Hemerocallis 'Happy Returns' is one of the most popular and cheerful daylilies available, beloved for its abundant, soft yellow blooms that return again and again from early summer right through to fall. Compact, reblooming, and incredibly easy to grow, it is equally at home in a porch container, on a sunny patio, or planted in a garden border. A reliably joyful performer that earns its name season after season.

Hemerocallis 'Happy Returns' Care Guide

Performs best in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily, which is essential for the prolific reblooming this variety is famous for. A sunny porch step, patio container, or open garden border is ideal. In partial shade, bloom frequency and quantity will decrease, though the foliage remains attractive.

Keep soil consistently moist during the active growing and blooming season. Container plants will need more frequent watering — check every 3–5 days during summer heat. Once established in the ground, it develops good drought tolerance. Ensure containers have drainage holes and never allow the root zone to become waterlogged.

Well-adapted to a wide range of outdoor humidity conditions with no supplemental moisture requirements. Good air circulation on an open porch, patio, or in a garden border contributes to overall plant health and helps discourage foliar diseases during humid summer months.

A tough, cold-hardy perennial that handles both late frosts and summer heat with ease. Its exceptional temperature tolerance makes it a reliable choice for a wide range of outdoor climates. Container-grown plants benefit from being moved to a sheltered spot during sustained hard freezes below 15°F to protect the roots.

An exceptionally reliable perennial for Zones 3–9 that returns faithfully each spring. In containers it overwinters well with minimal protection in most zones. When planted in the landscape it will gradually multiply and expand, delivering an increasingly impressive display of cheerful yellow blooms with each passing season.

Apply a balanced fertilizer once in early spring as foliage emerges and again in early summer to fuel the long, repeat bloom cycle this variety is celebrated for. Avoid heavy nitrogen feeding mid-season. Our Instant Plant Food is a convenient way to keep 'Happy Returns' blooming its best all season long — simply mix into your watering routine at the start of spring and again as summer blooming begins.

Repot container-grown plants every two years in early spring before new growth begins, or when the plant is visibly overcrowding its pot. Choose a container at least 2 inches larger with excellent drainage. Use a rich, well-draining potting mix amended with compost. Water thoroughly after repotting and place in full sun. For in-ground planting, simply divide and replant as needed.

Remove individual spent blooms daily during the flowering season to keep the plant tidy and encourage the next round of buds. Once all flowers on a scape have finished, cut the entire stem down to the base of the foliage. Cut the foliage back to a few inches above the crown in late fall or early spring to prepare the plant for the new growing season.

Divide every 3–4 years in early spring or fall when clumps become crowded. Lift the entire plant, separate into individual fans or small clumps using a sharp spade or knife, ensuring each division has a healthy root system and several leaves. Replant or pot immediately at the original depth, water well, and keep consistently moist until new growth confirms establishment.
