The Purple Passion Plant is one of the most uniquely textured and visually striking houseplants available — its deep green leaves are entirely covered in a dense coat of vivid violet-purple hair that shimmers and glows in the light, giving the plant an almost velvety, iridescent quality that is impossible to replicate. Bright, tactile, and genuinely unlike anything else on a shelf, it brings an electric burst of color and texture to any indoor space. Fast-growing, easy to care for, and endlessly eye-catching — a true hidden gem of the houseplant world.
Purple Passion Plant Care Guide
Requires bright light to maintain the intense purple coloring of the distinctive hair covering — the more light it receives, the more vivid and saturated the purple becomes. A south or east-facing windowsill with several hours of bright light is ideal. In insufficient light the purple fades significantly toward green and the plant becomes leggy and sparse.
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, roughly every 7–10 days. Avoid getting the hairy leaves wet when watering — water at soil level only, as moisture trapped in the purple hair covering can promote rot and fungal issues. Use a pot with good drainage and never allow the plant to sit in standing water.
Tolerates average indoor humidity well and does not require supplemental moisture. Importantly, avoid misting this plant — water droplets trapped in the dense hair covering can cause unsightly spotting on the leaves and promote fungal issues. A pebble tray nearby provides gentle ambient moisture without wetting the foliage.
Thrives in the warm, stable temperatures of a typical indoor environment. Avoid temperatures below 55°F and keep away from cold drafts and air conditioning vents. Consistent warmth encourages the fast, vigorous growth and rich purple hair coverage this plant is celebrated for.
A tropical plant suited for outdoor growing only in frost-free Zones 10–12. In all other climates it is grown as a year-round houseplant. Its fast growth rate, striking appearance, and tolerance for typical indoor conditions make it one of the most rewarding and distinctive houseplants in our collection.
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Consistent feeding supports the fast, vigorous growth and maintains the intense purple coloring this plant is grown for. Our Instant Plant Food makes monthly feeding simple — just add to your watering can once a month. Reduce in fall and pause through winter.
Repot each spring into a container 1–2 inches larger with good drainage. Use a well-draining, quality potting mix. The Purple Passion Plant is a fast grower and benefits from annual repotting to maintain its vigor. Water thoroughly after repotting and place in bright light while settling.
Use a soft, dry brush to gently remove any dust from the hair-covered leaves — never use a damp cloth which can damage the delicate surface and cause spotting. Remove any yellowing or leggy stems by cutting cleanly at a node. As the plant matures and becomes woody at the base, regular pinching of stem tips encourages bushier, more compact and colorful new growth.
One of the easiest houseplants to propagate — take 3–4 inch stem tip cuttings, remove lower leaves, and place in water or moist potting mix in a bright location. Roots develop quickly, typically within 2–3 weeks. Regular propagation from tip cuttings also helps keep the parent plant bushy and full, as older plants can become leggy over time.
