Most bromeliads are categorized as epiphytes (growing on the side of another plant; not needing soil to thrive) The collection of nutrients from waste dropping into the cup of the plant feeds them. In the wild, frogs are a companion as they also find nourishment from the water cup the bromeliad provides where some mosquito larvae live.
