Similar to the other Snake Plants you're used to, this one is extremely easy to care for (they are part succulent, after all) but they come with a little slimmer, thinner, and slicker leaves. Happy to go a long time between waters, they are tough as nails, tolerant of most conditions, and very good at cleaning the air. The coolest part? Sometimes these varietals bloom large clusters of white-green flowers with a beautiful fragrance.

Sansevieria Fernwood Care Guide & Presentation

Sansevieria Fernwood

Sansevieria Fernwood: Overview

The Sansevieria Fernwood, also known as Sansevieria ‘Fernwood’ Mikado, is a striking and resilient houseplant, prized for its unique, cylindrical leaves that grow upright and display a deep green color with subtle lighter green banding. Belonging to the Asparagaceae family, this snake plant variety hails from West Africa. It’s well-suited to different environments, due to its adaptability and hardy nature.

The Fernwood Snake plant thrives in USDA hardiness zones 9 to 11 and can reach up to 2 feet in height when fully mature. Known for its longevity, this rare plant can live for many years with minimal care.

Sansevieria Fernwood is a low-maintenance, sun-loving plant that tolerates low-light conditions, making it ideal for both bright and dimly lit spaces. Its symbolism is often linked to good luck and prosperity, making it a popular choice in Feng Shui practices. However, it is important to note that, like other snake plants, it’s toxic to pets if ingested.

Other popular Sansevieria varieties are the Sansevieria Moonshine and Sansevieria Samurai, which offer a unique aesthetic appeal that makes them a favorite among houseplant enthusiasts.

Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado: Care Guide

Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado is a hardy, low-maintenance plant, ideal for beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts. Consider our snake plant care tips to help it thrive with minimal effort.

Watering and Soil

Water your snake plant sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's crucial to ensure the soil is well-draining. Use a cactus or succulent potting mix that allows excess water to escape quickly.

Light and Temperature

This Mikado Snake Plant prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate low-light conditions, making it versatile for different indoor spaces. It thrives in temperatures ranging from 45°F to 100°F (7°C to 37°C) and should be kept away from cold drafts or sudden temperature drops.

Humidity and Feeding

Fernwood Sansevieria is not fussy about humidity and can adapt to average household humidity levels. During the growing season (spring and summer), apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once a month.

Repotting and Propagation

Repotting is only necessary every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its container. Snake plant propagation is simple through division or leaf cuttings. When dividing, ensure each section has a healthy root system before replanting in fresh soil.

Pruning, Cleaning, and Common Issues

To prune your snake plant, just remove any dead or damaged leaves. The leaves should be cleaned occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust. Common issues with your Sanseveria include overwatering, which leads to root rot, or pest infestations like spider mites, which can be treated with insecticidal soap.

Fernwood Snake Plant: Placement, Companion & Alternative Plants

Fernwood Mikado is a versatile tropical plant that thrives in various environments, making it an excellent choice for different spaces and lifestyles. Its compact size and low-maintenance nature make it ideal for a variety of placements.

Best Locations & Uses

  • The plant’s easy-care requirements make it ideal for those new to gardening or with a hectic lifestyle.
  • As the plant is mildly toxic, it’s best suited for households without curious pets.
  • Its compact growth habit makes it perfect for apartments, dorms, or offices with limited space.
  • Suitable for areas like bedrooms that don’t receive direct sunlight.

    I love my plant! It

I love my plant! It arrived beautifully packaged and thriving. I have never cared much for snake plants - too stiff and spikey - but this variety is stunning. Thank you so much!
